New Unity Scopes Technology Detailed by Canonical

scopes tech changesCanonical has published details of its new Scopes technology, set to be at the core of the converged Ubuntu experience.
The base of the Unity 8 interface is made up of a series of views, like Apps, Music, and Home. Within each of these views are Scopes that serve up a range of results from both online and offline sources, such as music tracks and and sports results.
Its a great idea that puts content at the heart of Ubuntu.

New Scopes Technology

The New Scopes in Ubuntu Phone
Better Presentation: The New Scopes
In the new converged Ubuntu the aim is increase the breadth of discoverability through Scopes; the control users have over them; and improve the way in which data is presented through them.
In short, a big ol revamp.
Change is sorely needed; the incumbent approach is less than ideal. A varied mix of data is forced through the same rigid templates, regardless of whether or not it would be best presented in a different way.
It doesnt help the user, and it doesnt help the content.
To rectify this a new dash toolkit is being introduced that allows data to be displayed in new, flexible ways. For example, results for an image search would work best as large thumbnails in a carousel for browsing, while news snippets are more useful in list view, with a wider content area to display text.

Opportunity

In the current desktop version a glut of Scopes are enabled by default. This is noble in aim, but poor in reality; a simple search for something innocuous returns an ungainly, un-navigable vomit soup of fixed-size thumbnails.
With the heuristics so out of whack many reach for the off switch. In doing so they miss out on some of the benefits.
The new Dash coming to Ubuntu tackles this head on in a number of ways. The first, mentioned above, is by allowing Scopes to present data in a more engaging way. The second is by introduced a Scopes Store that allows content sources to be installed and disabled easily.
scopes-store

Privacy

No doubt keen to avoid a repeat of the backlash surrounding the desktop implementation, these new scopes appear to have been built with privacy concerns baked in from the get go.
Each scope, whether added through the Scopes Store or enabled by default, will run independently in its own sandbox. This sandbox, Canonical say, is enforced at the kernel level thereby making it impossible for a scope to break out of the sandbox and do something it shouldnt, like spam your contacts book.
But the insulation doesnt stop there. Scopes will only be able to have one of two permissions: the ability to access the network or file system; they cant have both. This approach prevents a scope from retrieving sensitive information from the file system and then shipping it out via the network to some remote server.

When?

Ubuntu say phone and tablet users can expect to find the new technology, which is still in active development, land in the coming weeks. It wont be included on the desktop version of Ubuntu until Ubuntu 14.10 at the earliest.
To learn more head over to the Ubuntu Developer website.

Ubuntu Phone Adds New Swipe to Close App Gesture

One of Many, Many Changes Inbound

Ahead of the first developer-orientated handsets launching in the autumn, Ubuntu developers have been chipping away at the platform to add more polish and features to the user experience.
Other changes that have either recently arrived or are on the way include the transition of apps from hidden bottom edge toolbars to Firefox OS-style header bars; improving the push notifications server framework used to keep apps alive in the background; and bringing increased functionality to core apps like the web browser and camera.
One missing feature unlikely to find its way back is allowing users to set a custom background image. Canonical says this is a design team decision. OEMs and scope makers will, however, have some potential to [customize] the appearance and branding of the dash, so do expect some visual leeway to be found further down the line.

HANDS ON WITH THE HUAWEI HONOR 6 ANDROID KITKAT

Fresh from the launch in Beijing last week, we managed to get our hands on Huaweis latest midrange smartphone, the Honor 6. The Huawei Honor 6 is the latest in the line of low-cost, high-performance devices to come out of the middle kingdom and with a name as large as Huawei behind it as well as the crazy specs it is packing, the Honor 6 looks like a great alternative in the industry today.

The Huawei Honor 6 represents a change as opposed to the usual Honor range, bumping it up to the blurred line between flagship and mid range. The build quality while not strictly premium, is pretty decent for the price. The Honor 6 is the first device to use the Kirin 920 chipset. Huawei is confident that it is as good, if not better than the Snapdragon 805 currently the most powerful mobile processor in Qualcomms stable. Keep in mind, the Honor is NOT a high end device! In fact there have been reports that the Honor 6 is cannibalising sales of the Ascend P7, Huaweis main flagship, in the phones native homeland.

The Honor 6 has a very decent build with a glossy glass rear as well as a silver matte brushed metal like rim. The one strange thing is that it doesnt wrap completely around the phone on the bottom instead opting for the same finish as the body. The rear of the Honor 6 is not removable and hence the battery is fixed as well. Access to the SIM and MicroSD card slot is from a flap on the side below the power button and the volume rocker.

Compared to the Xiaomi Mi 3, the Honor 6 does have a smaller, more curved footprint and in all honesty doesnt share the build quality of the Mi 3, despite being on a similarly affordable range. The curves on the Mi 3 are more purposeful and integrated compared to the Honor 6. This is subjective however as some people will most definitely prefer the shape of the Honor 6 and how it fits in the hand.

Emotion UI
Huaweis skin of Android is called Emotion UI and has some rather interesting features. One of the cool ones is that it allows you to adjust the white balance of your device to match your preferences! You can adjust how cool or how warm your colour is and in all honesty this is the first time Ive seen it in a phone.

The settings menu is rife with interesting features with uses like hiding the software home, back and multitask window to be brought back up with a swipe, ROG Technology which seems to be a not-too-well-worded power savings mode, Gloves Mode which enables touch through layers of clothes and Performance Mode which is pretty self explanatory.

At the end of the day, Huawei have done a good job blurring the line between flagship and mid range with the Honor 6. The specs of the device are top notch and while the build quality is decent, its nothing to shout home about. It may be a little more expensive than the Mi 3 but at just over RM1,000 and with the specs that are said to be better than the snapdragon 805, this is definitely a device to look forward to.
